MD/MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology

The PG medical students are exposed to obstetrics and gynecology, as well as ambulatory primary health care for women. Considerable patient care responsibilities are provided by rotations in obstetrics, gynecology, emergency medicine, critical care, geriatrics. Knowledge and experience in primary health care are provided to the trainees by the programs in an ambulatory environment designed to enable continuity of care over an extended period of time.

The postgrad trainees function as primary surgical assistants or as primary surgeons with complete management or operative management responsibilities. The faculty serve the role of teacher/supervisor in promoting this graded responsibility. Rotations include: obstetrics and gynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, internal medicine, oncology. The surgical skills training course, suturing practicum, and laser course develop surgical techniques, while practicums in gynecologic and obstetric ultrasound provide training in scanning techniques.

The programs aim to develop the knowledge base, patient management skills and surgical skills. Posdgrad trainees in higher years are responsible for administering the teaching service, supervising the junior trainee staff, managing patients and instructing medical students. The senior trainees are responsible for all aspects of care on the OB and GYN services in consultation with the teaching faculty.

Emphasis is placed on health maintenance, disease prevention, risk assessment, and counseling. Teaching rounds on the inpatient and outpatient services are an integral part of PG medicine education in OB/GYN. They are usually facilitated by the faculty of each subspecialty, through Grand Rounds and Subspecialty Conferences and includes senior visiting professors and specialists.

The foundation of the formal teaching of the postgraduate program in Obstetrics and Gynecology is done in collaboration with the departments of Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Geriatrics. Practice meetings provide an opportunity for trainees to have input regarding the management of the pregnancy care services and provide the basis for discussion of the related field of medicine.
